The Uniqueness Of Hanging Wall Sconces

When it comes to hanging light fixtures, most people immediately think of large chandeliers and hanging lamps. While these can be used to complement your home, very often such large lighting fixtures are not quite practical for most homes or for small spaces around the home. A simple solution for this problem is - hanging wall sconces.

Hanging Wall SconceUnlike regular wall sconces, hanging sconces are not completely mounted on the wall. Instead, the electrical box and the mounting plate are fixed to the wall, but the actual light (bulbs and frame) hangs a few inches away from the wall. These types of sconces can usually be hung in two different ways. You can either hang them by using a chain, or by using a telescoping rod or stem. Hanging wall sconces that are hung using a chain give you the added flexibility of raising or lowering the height of the sconce, by using different lengths of chain.

Hanging-sconces are available in many different styles such as contemporary, antique, traditional, and rustic. Of these, rustic hanging sconces are quite a popular choice. Different designs available under rustic hanging sconces include elk sconces, rustic pinecone sconces, bear hanging sconces, Pasadena twigs sconces, moose hanging wall sconces etc.

How To Hang Sconces

  • If your ceilings are high (usually around 12 feet from the floor), then you should hang your wall sconces at the 7 feet height. This keeps them out of the way of people’s heads and also provides a proportional look along with adequate lighting.
  • For standard ceiling heights (8 feet to 10 feet), the sconces should be hung about 5 ½ to 6 feet from the floor. However, if you are installing the sconces where there is a lot of foot traffic, you may want to avoid hanging sconces and go with the regular wall mounted sconces.

With hanging sconces, there is no fixed rule as to their height. Go with whatever looks best according to the size and style of the sconce, and other furnishings in the room.
